About Deskside Works

Origin and Vision

Hello, and welcome.

I have wanted to make a desktop companion for a long time. The idea has been with me, on and off, for more than a year. At first, it was just a collection of scattered ideas and experiments: how a character should appear on the desktop, how they could keep someone company, and how to add a sense of interaction and presence without interrupting everyday computer use. Later, while continuing to learn the related skills, I slowly kept building those small ideas.

During that process, I encountered open character projects and came to know and love several charming characters. These include つくよみちゃん (Tsukuyomi-chan) and Amitaro's Ami Koharune. What attracted me was not only the characters themselves, but also the idea of encouraging creation, allowing open use, and letting more people participate freely. The feeling that characters continue to grow through use, and that creation keeps expanding through sharing, is very appealing to me.

So I started trying to bring open characters I like onto the computer desktop as desktop companions, letting them be seen and interacted with in daily life. Maybe, now and then, they can also bring a little sense of company and creative inspiration.

If conditions allow, I hope this project will not stop at simply bringing characters to the desktop. While building a product around these characters, I will also try to organize content produced by collaborating creators that is suitable for continued use. With the creators' consent, clear credit, and clear license boundaries, I hope to gradually publish such content in a free and commercially usable form. In that way, it can serve not only this software, but also other creative works. It may not be a large amount, and it may not be complete all at once, but I hope it can become a small piece of real help.

That said, this is still a personal project moving forward slowly through trial and error. It may not always be mature, and it may not look like my ideal version at the beginning. Rather than a finished answer, it is more like an ongoing process of experimenting, learning, and polishing. I will do my best to make it good, and I hope everyone can see it as a small work that is still growing.

For now, this place will continue to revolve around the open characters I like. In the future, I may also try creating and running characters of my own.

I have always hoped that characters will not only be watched, but can truly step into life; and that creation will not only remain an idea, but can happen more naturally and more easily.
